Some Whys and Hows of Midline Crossing

Moving across your body is one of the most reliable ways to strengthen hemispheric integration and improve your physical health in general. That is why we do many of these movements- always in slightly different ways- in our sessions.

Following the Viniyoga tradition, midline crossing explorations are understood as coordinated and synchronized movement of the limbs, plus body parts and concentration on opposite sides of the body. Why body parts and concentration? Because MUDRAS, that is gestures, can be done with different parts of our body not only with the hands (yes: your gaze is crucial, for example) and CONCENTRATION can be directed. Awareness is important also because it allows us to cultivate a way of moving that is harmonious, natural, relaxed and fully conscious of sensations... that we layer with appropriate breathing techniques.

That is why in in our approach, you do not only get the physical benefits of cross lateral movement, but can also foster the creation of new neural pathways by intensifying the communication between the two hemispheres of the brain, and by coordinating the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Here 10 reason to joyfully practice contralateral movement:

  1. Increase your body-mind coordination, stability and balance.
  2. Boost your brain function and cognition
  3. Perform your daily activities with more confidence
  4. Become more agile and graceful in your movements
  5. Improve your posture
  6. Develop your PROPIOCEPTION (awareness of your body´s position and movements)
  7. Build your core strength
  8. Increase your capacity to concentrate
  9. Feel more calm
  10. Energize your mind in a healthy way

Happy midline crossing!🙏
